Ivan has a nice post up over at Snipperoo on "Ten Sins of the Widgets Makers."
I agree with most of them with the following caveats:
- Sometimes you have to get stuff out before it's perfect
- Sometimes you have to have sacrifice functionality for simplicity

Totally agree - never wait till things are 'perfect'. Thus we can handle boring widgets and huge widgets and overexcited widgets. Look at the success of MyBlogLog widget - which to me breaks most of the rules. The new version, when it arrives, will no doubt be nowhere near as successful.
